10 Under $20

Florence Diffey

At Vera, we pride ourselves on being able to offer an amazing selection of high quality wine in all styles and in all price points. While it is super easy for us to source amazing and beguiling wines that sit on the shelf at $40, it's a lot harder to find the same quality and drinkability at half the price. That's why we are super proud to present a stellar line up of 10 wines at $20 and under available at Vera.

This is not an exhaustive list of all the wines that we offer at <$20, but a nice little snapshot of your potential hump-day wines for Autumn. Most of the wines listed here also have a sibling or two in the same price point, in another section of the store, so make sure to keep you eyes peeled in-store and online for these brands as they all represent insane value for money.

1. Upstarts Sparkling NV

This is an absolute firecracker. At a mind-blowing $14, this has become a staple of Vera since it's inception. A dry, easy-drinking sparkling made from sustainably grown fruit in the Clare Valley. While it isn't available online due to *cough* competitors pricing *cough*, please get in touch to order. Other wines in the range include a Pinot Grigio ($16) and a Shiraz ($14).

2. Hesketh Pinot Grigio 2022

The Hesketh family produce outstanding quality wine from sustainably farmed grapes in South Australia. They have a few different ranges, but the same attention to detail is paid to all. This regional expression of Grigio from the Limestone Coast is pristine and fresh, with pithy citrus fruit and floral aromatics. Look out for their Pinot Noir - another excellent school night wine.

3. Alkoomi 'Grazing' Riesling 2022

From the third generation producer based out of their farm and vineyard in Frankland River, WA, Alkoomi make beautiful handcrafted wines that sing of where they hail from. This is zippy and vibrant Riesling is loaded with minerality and verve. Perfect pairing for fresh seafood.

4. Mike Press Rosé 2022

From the widely acclaimed producer based in the Adelaide Hills, this Rosé consistently over delivers on its price point. Vibrant, savoury with red fruit aromatics. This is a no-brainer for a Saturday afternoon. Other wines in the range include a Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Shiraz

5. Pour Le Vin 'Y'a Pas de Photo' Pinot Noir 2020

When it is clear who the winner is, “there is no need for a photo finish”. And we have a feeling this Pinot Noir will be a clear winner. – Pour Le Vin
Bright red fruits and crunchy acidity. YUM! Check out their excellent Syrah as well, called 'Faim de Loup'.

6. Arraez 'Calabuig' Tempranillo

A bright, fresh joven-style Tempranillo. This is an extremely versatile little number that is great with a chill on a hot day, but equally as delectable at room temperature paired with some tapas.

7. Mesta Garnacha 2020

One of our favourite organic producers from Spain. Mesta consistantly produce high quality wines at accessible price points. This Garnacha (Garnatxa as it's known up in the north or Grenache in French) is supple and rounded, with ripe red fruit and a moreish savoury finish that will keep you going back for more. See also their Tempranillo - delicious!

8. La Purisima 'Esto' Monastrell 2019

Made from un-grafted old bush vines in Yecla, Spain, this is a super concentrated and deep style of Monastrell (also known as Mourvedre or Mataro) with a splash of Syrah thrown in for good measure. The wine is loaded with ripe black fruit character as well as complex aromatics of fig and honey. A lot of wine packed into a little bottle here. They also have a stunning Macabeo at $25.

9. Days & Daze Shiraz 2021

The wines by Days & Daze are designed with sustainability in mind with organic practices followed in the vineyard and winery. The Shiraz and other wines in the range are also made with minimal intervention, so there is gentle handling, nothing taken away or added (other than a fraction of SO2 at bottling). A juicy and peppery style of Shiraz that is nice with a slight chill on a warm day. This range also includes a Pet Nat and Rosé, all under $25.

10. Young Poets Cabernet Sauvignon 2021

The winery takes its name in honour of the famous poet Henry Lawson, originally from the area, and so each bottle in the range features its own Blackout poem on the label, written by a local young poet. This is a lovely bright example of Mudgee Cabernet Sauvignon.
