This Gamay, produced by New California pioneers Nathan Lee Roberts and Duncan Arnot Meyers, was sourced from two cool-climate, high-elevation vineyards in the El Dorado region of the Sierra Foothills. Grown between 900-1000m at some of California's highest plantings, these sites have long been considered to sit on the edge of viticultural possibility, with their cool nights perfectly preserving the delicate aromatics of Gamay. Planted on similar granitic soils to Gamay's homeland of Beaujolais, this wine is full of all the fresh fruit, spice, earth, and mineral components that define great Gamay. Suitable for ageing yet showing exceptionally well right out of the gate, this is a wonderfully light red from some of California's most accomplished winemakers.
90/100 - The 2023 Gamay Noir is a blend from Witters and Barsotti, grown on granitic soils and done with a brief carbonic maceration. Sweet dried cherry, sweet pipe tobacco and cedar are all beautifully lifted. In 2023, the Gamay Noir is a bit light, but it’s a charmer. This is an especially earthy/savory style. - Antonio Galloni, Vinous
