The six wines everyone needs at home

Being prepared for all occasions means making sure you have the right bottle for when the moment arrives. 

Picture this: you’re sitting at home and the doorbell rings. It's your best friend, she’s just landed her dream job and suddenly you need bubbles. 

Another night you’re running late to get home, the takeaway has just arrived and suddenly you need a juicy glass of red. 

Sure, it's great to have some rare and special bottles in the wine fridge, however a well-curated wine collection at home should be diverse and full of wines for everyday enjoyment and all occasions. 

So what are the six styles of wines that every home should have on hand?

The celebratory bottle. This is the bottle you pull out for birthdays, special occasions, or when your best friend drops in unannounced with incredible news. Our go to is ALWAYS sparkling wine and for the very best celebrations, nothing beats a beautiful bottle of Champagne. 

The mid-week bottle of red. As we come into the cooler months, this section of my wine fridge becomes more important by the week. This is the bottle you grab on a Wednesday to celebrate getting through the first three days of the week. It's the lazy weekday couch wine to go with a bowl of Pad See Ew from your favourite Thai takeaway.

The fresh white. This is the bottle for those Sunday afternoons when the neighbours drop over just for “one”. This is the bottle for sunny afternoons on the porch. An all rounder wine that sits just as nicely on the dinner table as it does on the side table next to the couch.

The wild card. This could be anything, just something a little bit different to what you’d normally drink. This could be an orange wine, or a wine with a little bit of residual sugar to go with that big wedge of blue cheese you picked up from the shops.

The serious red. This is one for when the in-laws unexpectedly drop by and you want to impress or for those slow dinners when somebody says, “Let’s open something nice.”

The crowd pleaser. This is the reliable bottle for when you’re not trying to wow anyone but need something that will make everyone happy. This one solves the panic of only having expensive wines in the wine fridge that you don’t want to open. 

A well curated wine selection isn’t the most expensive one. It's the one that supplies solutions for all different wine occasions.
