Tyrrell’s Wines: Exploring a Hunter Valley Winemaking Icon
Josh DistefanoShare
Some wineries make wine, others help write the history of Australian wine. Tyrrell’s Wines have done both.
For more than 165 years, Tyrrell’s has been crafting exceptional wines in the heart of the Hunter Valley, earning a reputation as one of Australia's most respected and awarded wineries. Family-owned since 1858, Tyrrell’s has become synonymous with premium Australian wine, old-vine vineyards and a commitment to quality that spans generations.
Whether you're a seasoned wine enthusiast or simply curious about what makes Hunter Valley wines so special, Tyrrell’s really does offer an incredible glimpse into Australia's rich winemaking heritage.
A Rich History in the Hunter Valley
The story of Tyrrell’s began when English immigrant Edward Tyrrell purchased a parcel of land in the Hunter Valley and planted his first vines in 1858. More than a century and a half later, the winery remains in family hands, with fifth-generation family members continuing the legacy.
In an industry where trends come and go, Tyrrell’s has stayed true to its roots while continually evolving. The result is a collection of wines that are celebrated both in Australia and around the world for their consistency, elegance and ability to age beautifully.

The Home of Australia’s Most Famous Semillon
Ask wine lovers to name an iconic Hunter Valley Semillon, and chances are they'll mention Tyrrell’s.
The winery's legendary Vat 1 Semillon has become one of Australia's most awarded white wines and is widely regarded as a benchmark for the style. Young Hunter Valley Semillon is known for its bright citrus notes, crisp acidity and refreshing character. Given time in the bottle, those same wines develop remarkable complexity, revealing flavours of toast, honey and lemon curd. Tyrrell’s has spent decades perfecting this exact process.
Old Vines and Exceptional Wines
One of the secrets behind Tyrrell’s success lies in its vineyards.
The winery is home to some of Australia's oldest producing vines, with several blocks dating back more than 100 years. These mature vineyards produce fruit with incredible depth, concentration and character, helping create wines that really reflect the unique conditions of the Hunter Valley.
From Semillon and Chardonnay to Shiraz and premium single-vineyard releases, every wine begins with a focus on exceptional fruit and experienced vineyard management.
Innovation Meets Tradition
One of the aspects that make Tyrell's so special, is that while their wines are steeped in history, they have never been afraid to innovate.
Over the years, the winery has played an important role in shaping modern Australian winemaking, helping pioneer techniques and styles that are now considered industry standards. Today, under the guidance of Bruce Tyrrell and fifth-generation winemaker Chris Tyrrell, the winery continues to produce wines that honour tradition while embracing the future.
The acclaimed Winemaker's Selection range showcases some of the best parcels from each vintage, offering wine lovers an opportunity to experience Tyrrell’s at its very best.
